When I was a teacher of 4th graders, there was no more favorite time for both them and me,was to read one of Dr. Seuss’ books…even now I have very pleasant and vivid memories of those experiences.
How did it get so late so soon?
It’s night before it’s afternoon.
December is here before it’s June.
My goodness how the time has flewn.
How did it get so late so soon?
~Dr. Seuss
You have brains in your head.
You have feet in your shoes.
You can steer yourself in any direction you choose.
You’re on your own.
And you know what you know.
You are the guy who’ll decide where to go.
~Dr. Seuss
Waiting for a train to go
or a bus to come, or a plane to go
or the mail to come, or the rain to go
or the phone to ring, or the snow to snow
or waiting around for a Yes or a No
or waiting for their hair to grow.
Everyone is just waiting.
Waiting for the fish to bite
or waiting for wind to fly a kite
or waiting around for Friday night
or waiting, perhaps, for their uncle Jake
or a pot to boil, or a Better Break
or a string of pearls, or a pair of pants
or a wig with curls, or Another Chance.
Everyone is just waiting.
~ Dr.Seuss
I have heard there are troubles of more than one kind.
Some come from ahead and some come from behind.
But I’ve bought a big bat. I’m all ready you see.
Now my troubles are going to have troubles with me!
~Dr. Seuss
Did I ever tell you that Mrs. McCave
Had twenty-three sons, and she named them all Dave?
Well, she did. And that wasn’t a smart thing to do.
You see, when she wants one, and calls out “Yoo-Hoo!
Come into the house, Dave!” she doesn’t get one.
All twenty-three Daves of hers come on the run!
This makes things quite difficult at the McCaves’
As you can imagine, with so many Daves.
And often she wishes that, when they were born,
She had named one of them Bodkin Van Horn.
And one of them Hoos-Foos. And one of them Snimm.
And one of them Hot-Shot. And one Sunny Jim.
Another one Putt-Putt. Another one Moon Face.
Another one Marvin O’Gravel Balloon Face.
And one of them Zanzibar Buck-Buck McFate…
But she didn’t do it. And now it’s too late.
~Dr. Seuss

I’m approaching 50, and was lucky enough to be given Dr Seuss’s books in my early childhood, despite being from a poor background, green eggs and ham will stay with me forever, but more so in sophisticated company, I still rely on jokes such as: Why do birds fly south in winter; why do firemen wear red braces and what is big and red and eats rocks?
My favorite quote is “be who you are and say what you feel because those who mind don’t matter and those who matter don’t mind”
What’s the deal with the word “flewn”, as in “My goodness how the time has flewn.”? I assume not a typo – just a little twist to grab ones attention or to help with the flow? Thanks for any info.
Love Dr.Seuss!! We share the same birthday March 2
i love your book quotes and such and you inspire me to start writing and such your awesome keep on going !!!
Hi Lauren,
I don’t remember where “how did get so late so soon” came from….I think a good option would be “The Lorax“….it has an adult theme.
Sid

Hi Betty,
“Oh the Places You’ll Go” is commonly used at weddings…I did find a short poem reported to be by Dr.Seuss:
Pastor: Will you take her as your wife?
Will you love her all your life?
Groom: Yes, I take her as my wife,
Yes, I’ll love her all my life.
Pastor: Will you have, and also hold
Just as you have at this time told?
Groom: Yes, I will have, and I will hold,
Just as I have at this time told,
Yes, I will love her all my life
As I now take her as my wife.
Sid
I was at a wedding Sat, where they read the best poem by Dr. Suess. It was quite long and not a short cute one for kids. It was perfect for the young married couple.
Do you know which one I am talking about. I would so love to have a copy of it.
I have to do an assignment for poetry and I could pick any poem and I chose one of yours! I love your books, too. Meredith -8yrs.

Hi Celine…Dr Seuss first children’s book was “And to Think That I Saw It on Mulberry Street” in 1937…Sid
Thank you so much does anybody know when he first published his first poem I desperately need to know
Cheers
it is interesting
Dear Cristie…I would like to express my appreciation for your kind comment to Tori….I think Dr.Seuss would have shared your feelings and expressed it in his own unique way…Sid
Tori- It’s great that these poems make you feel better. But you shouldn’t let other people get you down. 99.9% of people don’t know what there talking about or why they are talking about it. So don’t let them affect you. I don’t agree with most religions but I don’t put down other people for what they believe… And it’s because I have grown to know better… so give the haters time to grow.
Dr. Seuss is just amazing!!!!! ;D
This site is really a great help. I have no friends and I am Jehovah witness so people tease me. These poems make me feel a lot better!
