The Lorax is a story about the tree loving Lorax and the greedy Onceler. When the Onceler shows up, he notices a forest of truffula trees. He realizes that these natural resources could be profitable by making “THNEEDS” out of them.

A thneed is a fine something that all people need. The Onceler, in his greedy state, encounters the Lorax. The Lorax “speaks for the trees because the trees have no tongues”. He protests the He called his family one by one and then all of them came and started to help him. They started whacking down trees to make Thneeds, something that everyone needs. These “things” started to sell at an amazing pace and the Onceler was making so much money. Pretty soon, something very terrible happened.

In his quest for money he polluted the air, polluted the water, and deforested all the “special trees” from the land. This, in turn drove away the animals that had lived in the area. They had relied on the trees for food and shelter. After the very last truffula tree was chopped, his family left him with no trees and no more money. When The Lorax drifted away from the polluted mess he left a pile of rocks where he stood, with one word …”Unless”

The Lorax
I am the Lorax, I speak for the trees.
Unless someone like you cares a whole awful lot,
nothing is going to get better. It’s not.

“Mister!”, he said with a sawdusty sneeze,
“I am the Lorax, I speak for the trees.
I speak for the trees, for the trees have no tongues,
And I’m asking you, sir, at the top of my lungs” –
He was very upset as he shouted and puffed –
“What’s that THING you’ve made out of my Truffula tuft?”

Unless someone like you cares a whole awful lot,
nothing is going to get better. It’s not.

Catch! calls the Once-ler.
He lets something fall.
It’s a Truffula Seed.
It’s the last one of all!
You’re in charge of the last of the Truffula Seeds.
And Truffula Trees are what everyone needs.
Plant a new Truffula. Treat it with care.
Give it clean water. And feed it fresh air.
Grow a forest. Protect it from axes that hack.
Then the Lorax
and all of his friends
may come back.

Now all that was left ‘neath the bad-smelling sky
was my big empty factory…
the Lorax…
and I.
The Lorax said nothing
just gave me a glance. Just gave me a very sad, sad backward glance.
He lifted himself by the seat of his pants and i’ll never forget the grim look on his face
as he hoisted himself and took leave of this place through a hole in the smog without leaving a trace
and all that the Lorax left here in this mess was a small pile of rocks with one word.
UNLESS

The Waiting Place…
…for people just waiting.
Waiting for a train to go or a bus to come, or a plane to go, the mail to come, or the rain to go or the phone to ring, or the snow to snow or waiting around for a
Yes or a No or waiting for their hair to grow.
Everyone is just waiting.

Waiting for the fish to bite or waiting for wind to fly a kite or waiting around for
Friday night or waiting, perhaps, for their Uncle Jake or a pot to boil, or a Better Break or a sting of pearls, or a pair of pants or a wig with curls, or Another Chance.
Everyone is just waiting.

NO!That’s not for you!
Somehow you’ll escape all that waiting and staying.
You’ll find the bright places
where Boom Bands are playing.

How the Grinch Stole Christmas
By Dr. Seuss

Every Who Down in Whoville Liked Christmas a lot…
But the Grinch,Who lived just north of Whoville, Did NOT!
The Grinch hated Christmas! The whole Christmas season!
Now, please don’t ask why. No one quite knows the reason.
It could be his head wasn’t screwed on just right.
It could be, perhaps, that his shoes were too tight.
But I think that the most likely reason of all,
May have been that his heart was two sizes too small.

Every Who down in Whoville, the tall and the small,
Was singing! Without any presents at all!
He HADN’T stopped Christmas from coming! IT CAME!
Somehow or other, it came just the same!
And the Grinch, with his grinch-feet ice-cold in the snow,
Stood puzzling and puzzling: “How could it be so?”
“It came with out ribbons! It came without tags!”
“It came without packages, boxes or bags!”
And he puzzled three hours, till his puzzler was sore.
Then the Grinch thought of something he hadn’t before!
“Maybe Christmas,” he thought, “doesn’t come from a store.”
“Maybe Christmas…perhaps…means a little bit more!”
And what happened then? Well…in Whoville they say,
That the Grinch’s small heart Grew three sizes that day!
And the minute his heart didn’t feel quite so tight,
He whizzed with his load through the bright morning light,
And he brought back the toys! And the food for the feast!
And he, HE HIMSELF! The Grinch carved the roast beast!

It was a mighty gorgeous sunset,
It was a truly beautiful sight.
All the house tops of Who-Ville glowing bright in the changing light.
All the Whos who lived here in Who-Ville paused and smiled as the sun sank down.
And the purple shadow of mount. Crumpit crept ‘cross the farmlands beyond the town.
It was a mighty peaceful sunset…
Until old Josiah happen to sniff.
And he whispered to his wife:
“Mariah will you also take a whiff?”
And Josiah and Mariah doubled-sniff.
And they said: “I wonder if…”
But they really didn’t wonder they knew it was terribly true.
They knew that the Sour-sweet Wind was coming back and what the Sour-sweet Wind will do.
“Always starts when that wind begins a-howlin’.
Sour-sweet Wind across the tree stumps on the wrong side of punker’s pond.
When that wind wakes up the greegrumps
From their sleep inside the tree stumps.
And all the greegrumps started a-growlin’
And that growlin’ and that howlin’
Runkles grunkles up the pond”
Josiah explained.

’Cause when old punker’s gets runkle-grunkled…
By that howlin’ and that growlin’
That always disturbs the Hakken-Kracks
And the Hakken-Kacks start a-yowlin’.
And the yowlin’ of the Hakken-Kacks pulse that runklin’-grunklin’,
Howlin’-growlin’, always irritates the Grinch.
And than, that Grinch starts in a-prowlin’”

On the fifteenth of May, in the jungle of Nool,
In the heat of the day, in the cool of the pool,
He was splashing…enjoying the jungle’s great joys…
When Horton the elephant heard a small noise.

So Horton stopped splashing. He looked towards the sound.
“That’s funny,” thought Horton. “There’s no one around.”
Then he heard it again! Just a very faint yelp
As if some tiny person were calling for help.
“I’ll help you,” said Horton. “But who are you? Where?”
He looked and he looked. He could see nothing there
But a small speck of dust blowing past though the air.

“I say!” murmured Horton. “I’ve never heard tell
Of a small speck of dust that is able to yell.
So you know what I think?…Why, I think that there must
Be someone on top of that small speck of dust!
Some sort of a creature of very small size,
too small to be seen by an elephant’s eyes…

“…some poor little person who’s shaking with fear
That he’ll blow in the pool! He has no way to steer!
I’ll just have to save him. Because, after all,
A person’s a person, no matter how small.”

So, gently, and using the greatest of care,
The elephant stretched his great trunk through the air,
And he lifted the dust speck and carried it over
And placed it down, safe, on a very soft clover.

When I was a teacher of 4th graders, there was no more favorite time for them and me,then to read one of Dr. Seuss’ books…even now I have very pleasant and vivid memories of those experiences.

How did it get so late so soon?
It’s night before it’s afternoon.
December is here before it’s June.
My goodness how the time has flewn.
How did it get so late so soon?
~Dr. Seuss

You have brains in your head.
You have feet in your shoes.
You can steer yourself in any direction you choose.
You’re on your own.
And you know what you know.
You are the guy who’ll decide where to go.
~Dr. Seuss

Waiting for a train to go
or a bus to come, or a plane to go
or the mail to come, or the rain to go
or the phone to ring, or the snow to snow
or waiting around for a Yes or a No
or waiting for their hair to grow.
Everyone is just waiting.

Waiting for the fish to bite
or waiting for wind to fly a kite
or waiting around for Friday night
or waiting, perhaps, for their uncle Jake
or a pot to boil, or a Better Break
or a string of pearls, or a pair of pants
or a wig with curls, or Another Chance.
Everyone is just waiting.
~ Dr.Seuss

I have heard there are troubles of more than one kind.
Some come from ahead and some come from behind.
But I’ve bought a big bat. I’m all ready you see.
Now my troubles are going to have troubles with me!
~Dr. Seuss

Did I ever tell you that Mrs. McCave
Had twenty-three sons, and she named them all Dave?
Well, she did. And that wasn’t a smart thing to do.
You see, when she wants one, and calls out “Yoo-Hoo!
Come into the house, Dave!” she doesn’t get one.
All twenty-three Daves of hers come on the run!
This makes things quite difficult at the McCaves’
As you can imagine, with so many Daves.
And often she wishes that, when they were born,
She had named one of them Bodkin Van Horn.
And one of them Hoos-Foos. And one of them Snimm.
And one of them Hot-Shot. And one Sunny Jim.
Another one Putt-Putt. Another one Moon Face.
Another one Marvin O’Gravel Balloon Face.
And one of them Zanzibar Buck-Buck McFate…
